Want to run System
Shock 1 without the hassle of installing DOS??
Below are step by step instructions for installing in
Windows 95/98/Me/2k/XP/Vista:

Shock 1 HOW-TO
I. Installing DosBox (version tested
and used is 0.73).
A. Download DosBox0.73-Win32 (1.39mb) and install
B. DosBox by default will automatically attempt to adjust cpu cycles for optimal
performance
C. To configure DosBox while playing to improve performance
1. Use 'CTRL+F8/CTRL+F7' to change frameskiping rate Up/Down
2. Use 'CTRL+F12/CTRL+F11' to change cpu cycles Up/Down
D. To configure cd/dvd drive support (skip step if not needed)
1. Browse your Startmenu for DOSBox-0.73>Configuration
then click
'Edit Configuration'
2. Add the line 'mount d d:\ -t cdrom (windows)' (change
'd:\' to whatever drive
letter you use for your cd/dvd drive)
E. To configure DosBox permanently (skip step if not needed)
1. Browse your Startmenu for DOSBox-0.73>Configuration then click
'Edit Configuration' or open the file using
notepad, usually located at:
C:\Documents and Settings\XXX\Local
Settings\Application Data\DOSBox\
dosbox-0.73.conf (where XXX is your
computer login name.)
2. Modify lines:
(recommended settings on a 3.2ghz with 1gb ram)
a. 'frameskip=0' to 'frameskip=1'
b. 'cycles=auto' to cycles=30000'
II. Installing/Configuring System Shock 1.
A. Run d:\INST\INITIAL.EXE,
select 'Choose Install Directory' > type 'c:\SSHOCK' >
select 'Install System Shock'
B. Create the folder c:\SSHOCK\CD
C. Copy ALL files and folders from d:\ to c:\SSHOCK\CD
D. Open the file c:\SSHOCK\CYB.CFG using notepad and edit the line
'cd_data_dir_path F:\cdrom\data' to 'cd_data_dir_path
c:\CD\cdrom\data'
E. Open the file 'c:\SSHOCK\CDSHOCK.BAT' using notepad and edit the line
'D:\cdrom\cdshock.exe' to 'C:\CD\cdrom\cdshock.exe'
F. Drag and drop c:\SSHOCK\INSTALL.EXE onto DosBox.exe
(usually located in c:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.73)
G. Choose 'Setup Sound System'
1. Choose 'Music card' > select 'General Midi' > select
'Auto'
2. Choose 'Digital card' > select 'SoundBlaster AWE32' >
select 'Auto'
3. You can test the cards if you want
4. Select 'Save Settings and Exit'
H. To run, drag and drop CDSHOCK.BAT onto DosBox.exe
(or you can create a shortcut on your desktop to DosBox.exe,
Right-Click the 'DosBox.exe shortcut' > Click 'Properties'
> Edit the 'Target:'
box to "C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.73\dosbox.exe"

III. Playing/Configuring the rest of
System Shock 1.
A. Drag and drop CDSHOCK.BAT
onto DosBox.exe
(Once you have started a new game you can configure the video
display and some audio
options)
C. Hit 'ESC' > choose 'Audio' and set volume levels > select 'Audio Options'
and set options > hit 'Return'
D. Choose 'Video' and set quality level > select 'Video Mode' and set resolution

(Note: Settings are only saved with your saved game)
E. Hit 'ESC'
